Spring miniTour 2018: Day 6

March 28, 2018

Up at 9am, administrivia … Al makes coffee, “deja vu all over again”. We go for a walk in the woods, up to the top of the mountain in the state park behind Al’s house. I forget to turn on ‘Map My Walk’ but take umpteen pics of dead leaves, another animated panel series in the works, as if I didn’t have enough projects. Back home, scan for brain-eating ticks, all clear.

Top o’ the mountain

Dei & Al

Dan Andreana brings his latest home-built sound project over, we set up and jam in the studio. Our second recording in two days, it’s a good one, minimal –

Sound file here.

Al makes pasta, dinner, pack up and we’re of to ‘My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts’ in New Paltz. We load in, and the lineup –

  8:30pm – Matt Luczak & Jack Maginsky
  9:00pm – DeiX
  9:30pm – Ohms of Resistance
10:00pm – 4 Airports
10:30pm – Elka Bong

Our best set so far, the AVSynth is rockin’! We load out, back to Al’s, wine, snacks and small talk, in bed by 1am.

Spring miniTour 2018: Day 2

March 24, 2018

We hit the road at 10am, Lowell to Montreal, Rte3 to Manchester NH to pick up Deidre. I93 to I89 to Burlington VT where we stop for lunch. From Burlington to the Canadian border where we stop for Customs & Immigration.

Marc Bisson

DeiX packing up

Welcome to VT

DeiX at Junior’s, Burlington VT

They wave us in, questions for Dei about trying to bring a taser into Canada. Cleared, up Rte 133 to 10 and across the Champlain Bridge. We miss the turnoff to downtown, detour back through the downtown, past McGill U, up Avenue du Parc, over to St Laurent, and we arrive at Brasserie Beaubien early.

Alex and Matt arrive at 6:30pm followed by a trickle of musicians, in total 20+ will be playing with Ensemble Habitant. We set up for a rehearsal. Dinner break, tonight’s lineup is –

  9:00pm – Ensemble Habitant
    recorder score by Matt Robidoux
9:30pm – Michel Meunier – solo electronics, plumbing
10:30pm – DeiX – pocket opera
10:00pm – Ensemble Habitant
“Ear Score”, Hildegard Westerkamp led by Eric Lewis
a graphic score by Matt Robidoux
11:00pm – Elka Bong – noise & video

Brasserie Beaubien, Montreal QC

David Dugas Dion

The flute/recorder score is performed on the sidewalk outside the venue. We play either B or F, two ‘continuous’ tones. It’s cold, after 15min we single-file indoors, still playing, lining up the length of the venue, and end. Next up Michel Meunier, Dei, the Ensemble encore and, finally, Elka Bong. Great venue, dive bar ‘surrealiste’.

Michel Meunier

Dei Xhrist

Michel and Dei complemented each other. The sound engineer did a great job with Dei. The ensemble was very, very good, playing well and ending ‘on a dime’. Elka Bong wrapped it up!

We hang out for a bit, load out, drop Dei at Alex’s, stop for pizza at 1:00am, Al & I crash at Emilie’s.

Fall Tour 2017: Day 5

December 15, 2017

On the road at 7:30am, early start, stopped at 9:30am for breakfast. Then on to Scranton PA and the Krispy Kreme Doughnut store.

Krispy Kreme Doughnuts

Ugly Sweater Day

It’s ‘Ugly Sweater Day’, I get an extra dozen Original Glazed FREE. Mary Ann will be delighted. Back in the car to I84 out of Pennsylvania, through New York and Connecticut, to Massachusetts. I arrive back home a little before 5pm, load out, unpack, have a bath, go out for dinner with Mary Ann, Eric and Felicia. Pass out around 9:30pm, tour over.

Fall Tour 2017: Day 4

December 14, 2017

Slept in, until 9am. Patrick and Jack are up, Zach dead to the world.

Fruit and yogurt for breakfast, turned down the Reese’s Puffs, but accepted an espresso from Jack. Quiet morning scanning Patrick’s library. He has a collection of Surrealist paperbacks. I update my tour log.

Patrick makes pasta with pesto for lunch.

Around 3pm we load out, Jack is riding with me. Back roads to Rte 40 through Maryland to West Virginia to Rte340 to I81 to Harrisonburg Virginia. We arrive at the Golden Pony about 6:30pm, load in, free pizza and a couple of Natty Bos. Jack orders his own personal pizza. Zach and Patrick are over at the record store. They join me in time for the free pizza.

Tonight we are part of the Cow Project Benefit, a fundraiser for a non-profit for preserving “the relationship of human, animal, and land.” We are expecting farm animals.

The Golden Pony

Jack’s personal pizza

Zach on the big stage

The Golden Pony, downstairs, is a club, big stage and sound system, which we will ignore. We have, perhaps, too much room. We set up – to the right, Zach upstage, Jack downstage, to the left Patrick downstage, and I’m upstage. We’re pretty spread out, it’s a big room, a different spatial volume than usual. Either, because of this, or just plain orneriness, I play too ‘loudly’, or to be more exact too ‘densely’. I need to leave more holes. And that’s densely, not intensely, which is good. Zach plays intensely. Nonetheless, it was, I think, a good set. Here, as in Baltimore, there were several audience members who were ‘dancing’!

Anxious to get back to Lowell and faced with a 9-10 hour drive, I decide to leave after our set, load out, back on I81. I drive until midnight, stop in Chambersburg PA.

Fall Tour 2017: Day 3

December 13, 2017

Up early, well sorta’ early. Expresso with Jack then work on the trip log. It’s still cold, to be expected but not welcome. Zach appears, I join him in a spontaneous percussion duo. We pack up and load out. Drop in at Little Amps to say goodbye, head downtown to Midtown Scholar Bookstore. Impressive but there’s Christmas music …

Midtown Scholar Bookstore

Zach in the Philosophy aisle

We browse for awhile, then backtrack a couple of blocks, there’s an Edsel in the used car lot, to the Vietnamese Garden for lunch.

Jack, Zach and an Edsel

Vietnamese Garden

After lunch, back on I83 south, I follow Jack and Zach to Baltimore. We wend our way through one-way streets to Normal’s Books and Records. Jack is dropping off copies of his book, Zach and I peruse the shelves. Two bookstores in one day.

The new Normal

Around 5pm we head over to the venue on Buena Vista Avenue S in the newest, kitschiest section of Baltimore. No one home, we backtrack to 36th Street, check out a record store and, next door, an interesting bookstore with a curated selection of contemporary books, reasonably priced, a good crowd in the store. Three bookstores in one day!

Then a beer at De Kliene Duivel, “Belgian beer and spirits offered in a spartan-chic bar with a neighborhood vibe.” Back on 36th Street to the Mount Everest Nepalese Restaurant for lamb saag curry. It’s time to head back to the venue.

The lineup was “… a tornado of magic ripping improvised joy!”

Plake 64 and the Hexagrams
+
Phobodeimos:
Dan Conrad – flute, electronics
Jenny Moon Tucker – sax, percussion, objects
Eric Franklin – modified guitar, theremin
Matthew Pony Bones – violin
with
Juliana Comcast – movement
+
Zach Darrup – guitar
Jack Wright – saxophones
Walter Wright – electronics),
with
Patrick Crossland – trombone
+
Twig Harper – electronics

Great crowd, 4 separate sets, tons of equipment all packed into a very, very small space. Young and enthusiastic people. We played 3rd, the audience stacked up in front of us, lots of eye contact, some dancing. If it had been the Red Room they would have all been sitting, looking serious (it’s art you know!) and stroking their chins.

Patrick

The crowd

It’s snowing, the street were aglaze, skating rinks, My car was ’round the corner and downhill, took 3 tries make it back up the hill to load out. We follow Patrick to his house south of Baltimore where, luckily, the roads are clear.

Jack made a recording.

We turn in around 1:00am.

The new Tappen Zee Bridge

Drive from my house in Lowell MA to Jack’s house in Easton PA. Pick up my rent-a-car, load out and i’m on my way by 10:30am. Google tells me the shortest, fastest route is out the MassPike, down I84 to Hartford, I91 to CT15 south to Westchester, I287 across the new Tappen Zee Bridge around New York City to I78, and finally NJ22 to Easton. With one stop for coffee and a second for gas, I arrive at Jack’s at 3:30pm.

I unload my gear, we chat for a bit. I set up my gear in the basement recording studio, Jack and I play for an hour before dinner. Barbara has made vegetable soup with potatoes, carrots, rutabaga, and currents with apple cranberry crumble for dessert. It’s all delicious!

My setup

Jack’s setup

Joel

Edmond and Jack

Joel Kromer and Edmond Cho arrive at 8:00pm, we head back down to the basement for a second recording session. Both Joel and Edmond play guitar. We play for over an hour then listen back. It’s a good session, new sounds 8^)))

Jack made a recording.

I have a late night snack then off to bed.
